Job Summary and Qualifications
The PARS (Patient Assessment and Referral Services) Clinician is responsible for aspects of both telephone and face-to-face crisis intervention/psychiatric triage, referral, and placement for behavioral health patients in the Emergency Department. They may conduct psychiatric assessments which include: history of present illness, family, development, social and medical history, mental status exam; and psychiatric diagnosis. In consult with the on-call psychiatrist or Patient Logistics Center, the initial treatment plan, including level of care, is determined. They are also responsible for ongoing resource and referral development activities to ensure patients are referred to the appropriate level of care either within a behavioral health unit or within the community.
PARS Clinicians work closely with behavioral health nursing staff, Outpatient Behavioral Health clinical team, the Emergency Department staff, and/or the Patient Logistics Center coordinating assessment/admission or referral process to appropriate level of care resources/placement. For those patients needing alternative services, PARS Clinicians facilitate appropriate disposition (i.e. transfer to another facility, arranging intake appointments).
- You will develop a positive engagement with the caller/patient, which facilitates an accurate interview.
- Schedule patients for evaluations, utilizing program-appropriate flow sheets.
- Triage phone calls: concise and complete assessments, appropriate follow-up, complete documentation on phone sheets.
- Collaborate with the Patient Logistics Center when necessary to assist with assessment and placement of behavioral health patients in the Emergency Department
- Complete assessment in well-written format and in a timely manner.
- Perform and document mental status exam.
- Demonstrate knowledge of community resources and partnerships to ensure appropriate level of care referrals are completed (residential crisis programs, specialized outpatient programs, etc.)
- Provide information to patients and families regarding specific inpatient and/or outpatient treatment programs.
- Collaborate with local CSB to assist with functions of an Involuntary Emergency Admission/Temporary Detention Order
- If appropriate consent is obtained, timely communication with outpatient therapist regarding admission/evaluation.
What qualifications you will need:
- Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
- 1-3 years experience is required, which can include a graduate level practicum. Experience must be focused in the area of inpatient hospitalization, partial hospitalization, crisis prevention, or community based experience.
- Three years’ experience preferred working directly with psychiatric care patients with medical social worker or counseling knowledge.
- Master’s Degree is required from an accredited social work or counseling program.
- LCSW or LPC license required.
